Utilizing Vinay and Darbelnet’s Translation Model for Idiomatic Expressions in Comedy Series Subtitles : An Overview abstract
Translation studies have experienced significant growth in recent years, evolving from its earlier association with comparative literature, language learning methodologies, contrastive linguistics, and translation workshops into an independent discipline. The term translation encompasses various meanings, reflecting its diverse applications. Idioms and proverbs, as culturally and socially bound expressions, require careful consideration to achieve equivalence when translated into another language. Vinay and Darbelnet proposed a systematic approach to translating idioms and phrasal verbs, facilitating equivalence at both word for word and sense for sense levels. Idioms, as culturally embedded linguistic expressions, play a significant role in reflecting the unique identity and worldview of a community. Their translation poses a considerable challenge, particularly when adapting them from English into Persian in audiovisual contexts such as comedy series, where cultural nuance and humor must be preserved. This study reviews the application of Vinay and Darbelnet’s model to analyze translation strategies used for idiomatic expressions in English comedy series subtitles. This paper focused on Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model as its theoretical framework to examine research articles related to the complexities of idiom translation. The findings reveal that, through a qualitative approach, most studies focus on the effectiveness of this model in maintaining both semantic accuracy and cultural resonance. It also highlights the delicate balance required to preserve the original intent and cultural depth of idiomatic expressions, offering valuable insights into enhancing the quality of idiom translation.
