DESIGN OPTIMIZATION AND FABRICATION OF A 14KW BRUSHLESS DC MOTOR FOR LOW SPEED APPLICATION

. In this paper, design optimization and fabrication of a direct drive 14kW Brushless DC motor for propulsion system has been considered. The main challenge of low speed brushless dc motor is pulsating torque due to cogging torque and torque ripple components which causes noise and vibration. In order to reduce pulsating torque components, the effect of slot skewing and dummy slots has been investigated using finite element method. Optimization results show that simultaneous utilization of these two methods has a significant effect on pulsating torque reduction.
