Abstract:
Polymeric membranes are gaining increasing attention in the field of gas separation due to their energy efficiency, compactness, and flexibility in operations. These membranes, especially composite and dual-layer polymeric membranes, provide enhanced permeability and selectivity, which are crucial for industrial applications like natural gas purification, CO۲ capture, and oxygen/nitrogen separation. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and detailed overview of polymeric membranes in gas separation, covering materials, fabrication techniques, performance characteristics, and recent advancements in the field. Special emphasis is placed on the developments in dual-layer membrane technology, challenges in developing high-performance membranes, and emerging materials like thermally rearranged polymers (TR), polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs), and mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Additionally, this article explores the environmental benefits of polymeric membranes compared to traditional separation methods.
