Abstract:

This article provides a comprehensive overview of vitrimer elastomers, a class of polymers that combine the properties of thermosets and thermoplastics. Vitrimers are characterized by dynamic covalent networks that allow for self-healing, reprocessability, and recycling, making them an attractive option for sustainable and high-performance materials. The article highlights the mechanisms behind vitrimer self-healing, focusing on dynamic bond exchange reactions such as transesterification, disulfide metathesis, imine bonds, and boronic ester exchange. These materials are explored for a wide range of applications, including wearable electronics, soft robotics, flexible sensors, and sustainable composites, offering unique advantages like shape memory and biocompatibility. Despite their promise, vitrimer elastomers face several challenges, including lower mechanical and thermal properties compared to conventional thermosets, issues with scalability, and complex synthesis methods. Future research is focused on improving the mechanical and thermal properties, ensuring scalability, and developing catalyst-free systems, as well as expanding their applications in tissue engineering, biodegradable implants, and nanofiltration. The article concludes that addressing these challenges will pave the way for the widespread industrial adoption of vitrimer elastomers, driving their use in sustainable, high-performance materials for various advanced applications.
