Abstract:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as transformative tools in civil engineering, facilitating the management, visualization, and analysis of spatial and geographic data. The integration of GIS into civil engineering practice enables professionals to address complex infrastructure challenges with improved accuracy, efficiency, and decision-making capabilities. This paper explores the multifaceted applications of GIS in civil engineering, encompassing urban planning, transportation systems, water resource management, geotechnical analysis, and environmental engineering. Through these domains, GIS supports critical tasks such as land suitability assessments, route optimization, flood risk mapping, and structural health monitoring. Its ability to integrate diverse datasets from satellite imagery and topographic maps to demographic and environmental data makes GIS indispensable in designing resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Additionally, the role of GIS in civil engineering education is growing rapidly, with many academic institutions incorporating GIS modules to equip students with spatial reasoning and data interpretation skills. The synergy between GIS and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) further enhances the design and analysis process by combining geospatial context with detailed engineering drawings. Despite these advantages, challenges remain in standardizing GIS data formats, training professionals, and ensuring interoperability across systems. This review consolidates findings from recent research to provide a comprehensive understanding of GIS's capabilities, limitations, and future prospects in civil engineering. By highlighting case studies and academic efforts, the paper demonstrates how GIS not only enhances engineering analysis and project outcomes but also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. As civil infrastructure becomes more data-driven, GIS is poised to become an essential cornerstone of modern engineering practice.
