Abstract:
This study explored the comparative impacts of two vocabulary learning strategies, making lucid images and engaging in memory activities, on the vocabulary gain and retention of Iranian English learners. From an initial pool of ۱۲۰ participants at Adib institute in Hamedan, ۶۰ homogenously learners were chosen based on an Oxford Placement Test and randomly divided into two experimental groups who learned the same set of ۸۰ new English words using either the lucid images method or memory activities. The findings indicated that the lucid images group achieved greater gains in immediate vocabulary acquisition in comparison with the memory activities group. The memory activities group also demonstrated significantly better retention of vocabulary than the lucid images group. The study fills a gap by comparing these strategies in an Iranian classroom context. It illustrates that both methods enhance vocabulary outcomes, but each is more useful at different stages of the learning process.
