Abstract:

This study presents a comprehensive thermal performance analysis of a novel heat sink design featuring cross cuts in exponential-curve radial fins under forced convection conditions. The design incorporates full depth cross cuts, creating independent fin segments while maintaining the exponential curvature for optimal flow distribution. Computational fluid dynamics analysis demonstrates improvement in heat transfer coefficient compared to solid exponential-curve fins, though increasing the pressure drop. Furthermore, a parametric analysis was conducted on fin thickness, which indicates that increasing the fin thickness enhances its thermal performance. The simulations were performed for Reynolds numbers ranging from ۱۰۰۰ to ۱۵۰۰۰, where the k-omega turbulence model is applicable. The simulations indicate that despite the increase in pressure drop, the heat transfer coefficient generally improves. This study demonstrates that by making small changes to the fin geometry, more reliable design can be achieved with significant improvement in the thermal and fluid-dynamic performance of the finned heat sink.
