Abstract:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in healthcare education, offering innovative opportunities to strengthen clinical skill acquisition among nursing students and practicing nurses. This review explores the integration of AI‑driven tools—such as intelligent simulation systems, virtual and augmented reality platforms, machine‑learning‑based assessment tools, and adaptive learning environments—in enhancing clinical competency. Evidence from recent studies demonstrates that AI‑enhanced simulation enables learners to engage in realistic, risk‑free clinical scenarios that accelerate psychomotor skill development and improve decision‑making accuracy. Virtual patients powered by AI generate dynamic physiological responses, allowing nurses to practice assessment, intervention planning, and clinical judgment in a safe environment where learning is tailored to individual performance. Additionally, AI‑based predictive analytics support educators by identifying learners’ weaknesses and offering personalized remediation plans, ultimately contributing to more efficient training programs. Automated skill‑evaluation systems, capable of analyzing performance data—including hand motion tracking, procedure accuracy, and adherence to safety guidelines—provide objective and timely feedback that traditional instruction often lacks. AI‑integrated learning platforms have also been shown to enhance knowledge retention through adaptive spacing algorithms and continuous performance monitoring. Despite these advantages, challenges remain regarding data privacy, system interoperability, faculty preparedness, and ethical concerns surrounding AI‑mediated evaluation. Moreover, the successful adoption of AI in nursing education requires strong digital literacy, curriculum redesign, and institutional investment to ensure equitable access. The findings of this review highlight that AI has significant potential to improve the quality, efficiency, and standardization of clinical skills training in nursing. When integrated responsibly and strategically, AI can support educators, empower learners, and contribute to a more competent and technologically skilled nursing workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern healthcare systems.
