Abstract:

One of the requirements for the practical implementation of quantum computing is the ability to prepare well defined initial state of qubits so that in ion-trap system the qubits are represented by ions with vibrational (external) and atomic (internal) degrees of freedom. In ion trap system the word cold, refers to the fact that all motional modes have to be cooled to their ground motional states because the dynamics assumes the precise control over motional states. Laser cooling is a process in which the kinetic energy of ions are reduced through the action of one or more laser beams and enables the preparation of well defined initial states of the motion. The last decades brought rapid progress in this research field as an instance of these progresses it can be mention the award of Nobel Prize in 1997 for experimental technique for laser cooling (Chu, 1998; Cohen-Tannoudji, 1998; Philips, 1998). In this paper with the purpose ofcooling trapped ions, Doppler cooling, Sideband cooling, sympathetic cooling and electromagnetically induced transparency laser cooling have been studied
