An overview of planning, design and construction of Sohar Industrial Port

Sohar Industrial Port is a new industrial port development, which is currently under construction on the Batinah Coast in the northern part of the Sultanate of Oman. This region is being targeted by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman for major industrial development, such as heavy metals,petroleum, petrochemical and other support industries. The project inception was in the late 1980 when preliminary studies for the industrialisation of the area and design of the port were initiated under the responsibility of the Ministry of National Economy and the Ministry of Transport and Housing. These studies finally led to preparation of a port master plan and securing a loan from Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) for the detailed design and construction of the port. This paper describes the background to the project development and financing from the Consultants for the detailed design and construction of the port.
