Vans Non-Van Ornamental Plants

City of Van has formed a tradition unique garden culture that dates back to the time of Urartian’s (BC 8-7. Century). The people of the city have had the opportunity of meeting different cultures as a result of being on trade routes. Cultural interactions have impacted on the type of the Plants in the traditional garden of Van. Due to the Beirut-Iran old trade route, the cultural and commercial relations formed with northern Mesopotamia and Iran enabled the transfer of developed plant and garden culture of this region to Van from early periods onwards. In addition to this, the relations that were formed with the West, the Dominican French Mission in Van in the Pre-Republic Area, Russian, Iranian, British Consulates, institutions such as American Schools has facilitated the transfer and growth of decoration plants to Van gardens. These ornamental plants which were unfamiliar to Van and its surroundings, adapted to the climate, soil and other environmental conditions of the region and even some species have become natural plants of the region over time. Particularly from Iran garden, 12 different species were identified in the traditional Van gardens that have grown. These species which did not belong to the habitat of Van or in other words which were not Van plants, still survive in Van gardens.
