Urban Reconstruction:Some Principles for Planning toward sustainability abstract

This paper addresses reconstruction in urban areas in post event stage in order to develop some principles and guidelines toward an integrated and comprehensive approach to achieve urban sustainability. Today urban systems are a complex of many parameters that interact together and are interdependent, therefore urban systems are very complicated in their functions and any change could lead to the whole system malfunction. Post event situation gives some opportunities for implementing new programs in order to improve the current condition. These opportunities are mainly during reconstruction, which is considered to be the proper time for implementing new plans. In a hazard prone country like Iran with experiences such as Bam Earthquake in 2003 or similar events in different parts of the country like Tabas (1978) or Manjil (1990); that in all these events the urban areas undergone lots of human and structural damages. The damages not only affected the cities by themselves but consequently the country impressed as well.
