Experimental and CFD Investigation of a Cylindrical Chamber with jet impingement stream in a new de-dusting system abstract

In this paper an integrated process is presented for improving the efficiency of cyclone de-dusting systems. Two cyclones are coupled with a special designed cylindrical chamber which includes a tube inside around which air impinging nuzzles are installed. An Eulerian-Lagrangian three dimensional CFD model was used to study this cylindrical chamber. Reynolds averaged Navier- Stokes and continuity equations were applied to solve steady turbulent flow through the cylindrical chamber with RNG-k-ε and Reynolds stress model. The effect of particle size distribution (PSD)for four different powders was calculated and simulation results were compared with the experimental data. Due to better agreement of RSM results with experimental data, this model was adopted for the rest of simulations. The effect of inlet, recycle, and jet impingement flow rate on separation efficiency of the system was investigated. Increasing the inlet and recycle flow rate has positively affected the system efficiency, but the jet impingement flow rate hasn’t had remarkable effect on the system efficiency. In addition, the pressure drop of the cylindrical chamber at three different inlet flow rates were measured and compared with simulation results. The simulation results show good agreement with experimental data and maximum errors are 6% and 15% for efficiency and pressure drop respectively.
