Materials Selection and Optimisation Strategy for Hydrocarbon Production abstract
Corrosion remains a key obstacle to sustaining operational success in hydrocarbon production. Its continued occurrence affects economy with consequences on safety of people and integrity of facilities. A central element in design of facilities and corrosion mitigation is the correct choice and deployment of materials which are both economical and suitable to provide satisfactory performance over the design life. This is becoming imperative with the increased level of production through the existing facilities, life extension of ageing assets and the move to harsher and deeper conditions in the search for hydrocarbon. This paper describes a systematic strategy for the effective choice of appropriate and economical materials covering both production as well as injection facilities. It captures past successes and highlights shortfalls in approach to effective materials selection for upstream operations hence allowing CAPEX reduction whilst achieving OPEX optimisation.
