Abstract:
In this paper, feasibility of the potential of wind in the vicinity of the Caspian Sea is studied through evaluating 3-hour data of the speed and the direction of wind in different regions with various depths of the Caspian Sea by drawing some typical monthly and seasonal wind rose diagrams. Afterwards, with the assessment of the achieved information through wave measurement buoys and the available anemometer, which is installed in the Caspian Sea as well as the analysis of swan maps of the Caspian Sea and comparing them with meteorology data from Iran and Turkey, the regions with the greatest potential for installing the offshore wind farm are found. Moreover, the installed capacity of wind power plants is evaluated and compared with the amount of exploitable energy from these areas. The suitable wind turbines for installing in these areas are investigated. The results show that the southern area of the Caspian Sea does not usually have a high potential for continuous wind (except in special cases) and the most wind energy can be exploited from the central and northern parts, which are more suitable for installing wind power plants.
