Abstract:
Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and nanorods were synthesised through chemical vapour deposition (CVD)method on quartz substrates, using a double zone electrical furnace. Structural and optical properties of ZnOnanostructurewas investigated. The samples were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), photoluminescencespectroscopy (PL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A broad visible emission and a narrow UV emission areobserved in photoluminescence spectra of ZnO nanostructures. PL spectra showed that the UV emission shifts slightlyto low frequency with the decreasing in nanostructure diameter. It has been found that the visible emission is originatedfrom surface defects. It was observed that decreasing in nanostructures diameters lead to increasing in surface defectsand consequently increasing the intensity in visible emission. Obtained results could be useful for light-emittingmaterials and other optoelectronic device applications.
