Abstract:

Objectives: Intraperitoneal adhesion is consequences of surgery in the abdomen and result in infertility, intestinal obstruction and pelvic pain. luteolin (LUT) is a natural product that has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-angiogenic effects. Formation of adhesion bands is accompanied with inflammation, angiogenesis and cells proliferation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate anti-adhesive effects of LUT on adhesion formation in animal model.Material and methods: 30 male rats assigned in to 5 groups (6 animals in each group) of LUT 10, 25 and 50 mg/kg and normal saline as a control group and intact animals. After animal anesthetization, peritoneal injury was conducted using a standard method. Two weeks following to surgery, animals scarified. For evaluation of microscopic and macroscopic changing and lipid peroxidation, samples of cecum and peritonea were harvested. Blood sample were collected to evaluate the TNF-α plasma concentration. Results: The results showed that microscopic and macroscopic injury in the LUT groups reduced significantly in comparison to normal saline. Furthermore, lipid peroxidation in treatment groups were decreased significantly. There were not shown any change in plasma concentrations of TNF-α in treatment groups in comparison to control group. Conclusion: Our data showed that LUT reduces lipid peroxidation, adhesion band formation in microscopic and macroscopic scale but no change in the serum levels of TNF-alpha.
