Abstract:
In the world of nanotechnology, the first concern is the potential environmental impact of nanoparticles. An efficient way to estimate nanotoxicity is to monitor the responses of bacteria exposed to these particles. In this study, antibacterial effect of zerovalent (ZVI) Fe nanoparticles were studied on the Gram-negative bacteria E.coli (DH5α) and Pseudomonas syringae and the inhibition of bacterial cell growth determined. The ZVI nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical reduction method and using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) the nanoparticle size determined. Different concentrations of Fe (NPs) containing, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 μg as well as on P. syringae and 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 μg were added on P. syringae and E.coli respectively in nutrient agar growth medium. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Fe0 nanoparticles for P. syringae and DH5α obtained. Maximum inhibitory percent for P.syringae and E.coli were 98% and 99.3%, respectively. The bactericidal effect of nano Fe0 was a unique property of nano-Fe0, which was not observed in other types of iron-based compounds. Results suggested the that possibility of using ZVI-NPs for effective development of antibacterial drugs with high efficacy towards the pathogenic microorganisms.
