Abstract:

Friction welding is a solid state phase pressure welding process in which no actual melting of the base metal takes place. Rubbing the two faces on each other produces sufficient heat that local plastic zones are formed and an end load is applied to the components which causes most of this plasticised metal extrude from the joint, carrying out any contaminants, oxides, etc. Thus two atomically clean metal surfaces are brought together under pressure and an intermetallic bond is formed. Friction welding of aluminum alloy (7000 series) rods with 25 mm in diameter was investigated to reach the best mechanical and metallurgical properties. In this study parameters including rotational speed (N), frictional time (t1) were varied in three levels and parameters like frictional pressure (p1), forging time (t2) and forging pressure (p2) were constant. The tensile test showed the best properties for 3600 rpm in rotational speed and 15s in frictional time. Also macroscopic image of the as welded specimens showed increase in flashes by increase of the parameters
