Abstract:

In this paper a new tuning technique based on bacterial foraging (BF) PI controller for the speed and current control of brushless DC motor is presented. Brushless DC motor control is not quite as simple as the regular brushed type. BLDC motors require a controller that can sense the proper time to reverse the voltage to the coils. The parameters of PI controllers in the inner current control loop and outer speed control loop which vary with the operating conditions such as variation of load torque and speed of BLDC motor changing of the drive are adjusted in order to maintain deadbeat response for speed and current of motor. A BF technique is employed in this study to obtain the parameters of PI speed and current controllers at varying load and speed of motor, these results are compared with the response of single current control method. Simulation results show that the proposed technique was more efficient in improving the speed response characteristics and torque ripple reduction. The BLDC motor and control method is modeled in Matlab/Simulink
