Abstract:
The corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures is one of the major challenges facing the construction industry. Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bars have lower weight and lower modulus of elasticity, but they usually provide higher tensile strength and durability than steel. On the other hand, FRP has disadvantages, for instance: no yielding before brittle rupture and low transverse strength. Therefore, the response of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars need to be investigated in details to evaluate the available design equations and control limits. The current study has investigated the flexural performance of FRP reinforced concrete (RC) beams using finite element analysis. After validating the numerical model against available test data from the literature, a series of sixteen FRP reinforced RC beams has been developed and analyzed in ABAQUS software, to investigate the beams’ flexural responses in four node bending test. The results from the numerical analyses are compared with the equations proposed by ACI-440, CSA S806 and ISIS guideline to see capability of the proposed equations in estimating the performance of the RC beams. It was found that the results calculated based on the Canadian codes equations were more conservative than the equations proposed by the ACI codes for the deflection of FRP reinforced beams
