Abstract:

Introduction: Improper waste management practices resulted in the loss of resources and energy. For a first step of a good planning in MSWM it is essential that we have a through data about MSW management approach and determine rate of MSW production, recycling, and burring in landfills.Methods: To investigate solid waste production rate and problems of waste management in Tehran, several questionnaires were prepared and distributed among various units of Tehran Waste Management Organization (TWMO).Results: TMSW production in Tehran city have been upward trend from 2006 to 2012 and have been stationed and downward trend from 2012 to 2014. DSPS MSW received by private systems have been upward trend from 2006 to 2010 but have been station and downward trend from 2010 to 2014. The amount of landfilling rate is have down ward trend from 2008 to 2014 because of increase in recycling rate. In year 2014, 57% of TMSW buried in landfill that located in aradkoh. In 2012 of total dray waste 40.3% is paper & cardboard then 20.7% plastic & PET have a highest rate.Conclusion: Landfilling requires huge landmass and is economically expensive process and may also result in several environmental and health problems such as GHG emission. Compost unit capacity not adequate for recent amount of biodegradable MSW production entered to Aradkoh center. We need doing a lot of work such training and preparation free recycling bins for people for increase recycling rate.
