A Neural Network Approach to Distance Relay Setting in the Presence of SSSC Using Switching Model abstract
In this paper, an intelligent method for setting the distance relays in the presence of SSSC for a first zone protection is presented. This paper reveals the problem imposed by SSSC and suggests a neural network-based approach as a solution. Also, switching behavior of Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) has been considered for computer simulations and data set required to train the ANN. Variations of
amplitude and phase angle of the SSSC would cause mal-operation of distance relays. The boundaries of the relay operation characteristic curve is modified according to the control parameters of SSSC to avoid incorrect operation of the distance relay.
