Aliphatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Sediments from the Prai and Klang Rivers and Estuaries, Peninsular Malaysia abstract

The distribution and sources of n-alkanes (nC10-nC36) were investigated in sediments collected from the Prai and Klang, Peninsular Malaysia. The concentrations of total n-alkanes in sediments ranged from 2547 to 4960 and 4049 to 15850 μg g-1 dw in sediments from the Prai and Klang Rivers, respectively. The even carbons numbered n-alkanes were predominant in the collected samples, which can be interpreted as a consequence of microbial activities. The carbon preference index (CPI) values indicate that the sources of n-alkanes were mostly from aquatic organisms or petroleum hydrocarbons. This is confirmed by terrestrial to aquatic (TAR) ratios in the collected sediments.
