Design and Implementation of a low-complexity One-way wide-band radio ranging system abstract

Radio ranging system is one of the main components of the radio navigation systems. Especially, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) functionality is dependent on its ranging system which measures the distance between the satellite (transmitter) and the user receiver. The main challenges of a radio navigation system are synchronization problem and high complexity of the receiver. In this paper, a spread spectrum radio ranging system has been implemented. Besides resolving the synchronization problem using an affordable and available clock source, the complex procedures of the acquisition and the tracking algorithms inside the spread spectrum receiver are replaced by a simple algorithm. Experimental results of the proposed radio ranging system in the field test are compared with the simultaneously logged GPS data. The results show the outperformance of the proposed system.
