Polyploidy induced by gamma-ray in the exposed CHO cell line abstract

The initial radiation damage to the DNA structure could lead to specific biological distortion, such as numerical chromosome aberration named polyploidy. Chinese hamster ovary cells exposed to 60Co γ-rays. The polyploidy of chromosomes were assessed from analyzing metaphase spreads chromosomes by Giemsa and G-banding methods in control and irradiated cells. The polyploidy was detected only in irradiated CHO cells with 2 or 6 Gy doses. Dose-dependency effect was not clearly observed in exposed cells with polyploidy aberration. Other aberration such as dicentric was appeared to be created in a dose-dependent manner. The susceptibility of gamma-ray induces polyploidy in exposed CHO cells was significant in comparison with control cells.
