Non-ionized radiation and chromosomal damage in human fibroblast cells abstract

Rapidly increasing possibilities of exposure to environmental extremely lowfrequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) have become a topic of worldwide discussion. Epidemiological and laboratory studies suggest that exposure to Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) EMF may increase cancer risk. An important basis for assessing a potential cancer risk due to ELF-EMF exposure is knowledge of biological effects on human cells at the chromosomal level. In this study, we investigated the effect of continuous ELF electromagnetic fields (60 Hz, sinusoidal, 2h, and 4 mT) on the induction of chromosomal aberrations and any changes in Chromosome Number in cultured human fibroblasts. The application of continuous ELF-EMF radiation did not change in chromosome number as compared to non-exposed controls. In addition, chromosomal aberrations were not increased in exposed cells as compared to control cells. Our data indicate that continuous ELF-EMF has no chromosomal aberrations on human fibroblast cells.
