Synthesis of alcohol-absorbent microgels based on poly[sodium acrylate- AMPS] through inverse-emulsion polymerization

Abstract: Alcohol absorbent microgels based on sodium acrylate and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) were prepared by inverse-emulsion polymerization. The effect of copolymer composition on the alcohol absorbency, morphology and rheology of the solutions were investigated. SEM images showed microgel formation. Alcohol absorbency was increased with increase of AMPS content in the microgel structure. The alcogel could absorb methanol and ethanol up to 90 g/g and 50 g/g respectively. the rheology of the solutions containing resultant microgels (in both in methanol and ethanol) showed shear thinning behavior with the same power law index value
