Abstract:
Syntactic foams are mechanical mixtures of micro balloons (hollow particles) in a matrix material. These materials are classified as closed pore foams, since the porosity in themexists in form of hollow particles. The closed pore structure gives advantages of higher strength and lower moistureabsorption coefficient compared to the opened cell ones.[1] The compressive strength of conventional foams is less than 10 MPa whereas syntactic foam have a compressive yieldstrength between 30 and 100 MPa.[2] Unsaturated polyester has many advantages such as low cost, easy to operate andgood wet ability and in this work has been used to synthesis syntactic foams by its combination with poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) micro balloon.
