Abstract:
NiAl intermetallic compounds have special properties that make them a suitable material for high temperature structural applications. Recently, production of these materials by self-propagating hightemperature synthesis (SHS) within a short time of processing and low energy consume has attracted scientist s attention. In this research, the effect of parameters such as pre-heat temperature, the amount of compression, and boron additions on the process has been analyzed. Ni3Al(B) was produced by mixing of elemental powder of nickel and aluminum in a 3:1 ratio with different amount of boron in a ball mill, compression of the mixture and combustion synthesis in an argon protected atmosphere. Structural changes induced by different parameters were tracked by X-ray diffractometery and scanning electron microscopy.
