Abstract:

Recent advances in nanofabrication and synthetic chemistry have lead to a dramatic growth in research activity in the area of magnetic nanostructures, with key applications in data storage, medical diagnosis, quantum information and nanotechnology. In this work, magnetite (Fe3O4) and manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by a phase co-precipitation method. The nanoparticles were obtained using NaOH and NH4OH reactants. The effect of pH and temperature was studied in the co-precipitation method. We found that the effective pH for NaOH reaction agents is about 11.5 and for NH4OH is about 8.00. X-Ray diffraction of the magnetite nanoparticles reveals a good crystalline structure, while for the manganese ferrite oxide particles it is seen that a separation MnO and Fe2O, takes place. Burnauer Emmett Teller (BET) test shows a very high specific surface area about 148.5 m/g for magnetite and 121.3 m/g for manganese ferrite nanoparticle. Based on the BET data, average particle size of magnetite and manganese ferrite are estimated 8 and 12 nm, respectively.
