Abstract:
Wide range of reinforcements used in improvement of soil performance leads to attention to the new accessible resource. In this case, natural resources could be appropriate materials instead of man made one due to the fact that they are really cost-effective and environment-friendly. This study was conducted to investigate the undrained behaviour of silty sands reinforced by randomly distributed discrete oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibres. The effects of fibre content and fibre length on shear strength and pore water pressure were investigated by carrying out the normally consolidated undrained triaxial tests. It was found that the fibre reinforcement can restrain the volume dilation of soil which this dilation, fundamentally leads to increase in pore water pressure in undrained conditions.
