Abstract:

Unsuitable highway subgrade soil requires stabilization to improve its properties . Fund restrictions or engineering economics dictate the use of the most economical material for stabilization. Steel industry is producing substantial amount of waste with fairly good engineering characteristics . In this research project , steel industry waste produced from the molds during forging process is used for the stabilization of soil. The addition of waste comprising of sand particles and skinny metal pieces alters the gradation of soil, resulting in improvement in the density and strength of the stabilized material. The performance of the stabilized soil with respect to ever changing weather conditions is also very much improved. Varying percentages of the steel industry waste were mixed with the soil. The improvement in density and CBR of the sample samples compacted at the optimum moisture content was checked. The study indicated a fairly good important in the strength properties and behavior of the stabilized soil at a reasonably low cost. The stabilization technique has an additional benefit of providing an environment friendly way to deal with steel industry waste.
