Abstract:
Environmental protection and control of the pollutions are the most important concerns of the current century. Nowadays, one of the most important environmental issues is collection and landfilling if municipal solid waste. Estimation of pollutant gases emission from landfills is essential to design and operation of gas collection systems for landfills. The aim of this study is to estimate quantities of CO2, CH4 and non-methane organic compounds (NMOCs) from Shiraz landfill. Produced CH4 in landfills can be used as fuel of gaseous turbines for generation of electrical energy or can be directly used for municipal applications such as cooking. As first step of this study all the necessary information about Shiraz landfill were collected. Then, amount of CO2, CH4 and NMOCs produced in this landfill were estimated. In this study methane content, potential methane generation capacity (L0) and methane generation rate (k) is consider equal of 50%, 170 m3/ton and 0.05 year-1, respectively. The results showed that during the years 1376 to 1408 amounts of CO2, CH4 and NMOCs emitted into the atmosphere from Shiraz landfill will be equal of 2077×106, 7.569×105 and 3253×104 tons, respectively. The calculations showed that Shiraz city needs a landfill with capacity of 2400000 m3 for landfilling of its solid waste during 32 years.
