A survey on association of feed fatty acids of cultivated rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and incidence rate of fin rot abstract

Objective: Fin rot is one of common problems of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms. One cause of the disease is because of nutritional deficiency. Objective of this study was to determine association of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids values and incidence rate of fin rot. Method & Materials: 10 fish farms were determined for sampling of fish randomly in summer in 2008. From each pond 100 rainbow trout were examined randomly. Fin rot rate and total fin rot to caudal fin rot ratio were determined. Consuming feed of the fish were analyzed and total fat and saturated and unsaturated fatty acids value were measured using GC. Association between total fin rot and caudal fin rot to fin rot ratio with total fat and saturated and unsaturated fatty acids values of feed were studied using SPSS statistical software. Results & Conclusion: Statistical analyses indicated that there was an adverse relationship between total fat of feed (8.61% to 13.79%) and fin rot rate (88% to 48%). Results also showed that there is significant difference (P<0.05) between three unsaturated fatty acids values (C14:1n5, C18:1n7, C20:4n6) and fin rot. There was also significant relationship between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids value of ration and rate of caudal fin rot to total fin rot (see below): C16:0, C18:0, C18:2n6 (P<0.01), C18:1n9, C18:3n3(P<0.05)
