A Review of Integrity A ssessment Methods for Gas Transmission Pipelines abstract

A course of study to evaluate the application of the universally known Pipeline Integrity Mana§ement System (pIMS) for the gas transmission pipelines of Isfahan district in NIGC has led to this overview of the methods for the integrity assessment of gas transmission pipelines. Integrity assessment is one of the main elements ofPIMS which provides the operators with indications of near time failures in the form of leaks or ruptures. These indications, prioritized. based on the resuhs of a risk. assessment procedure, are planned for mitigation activities. The loss of integrity in a pipeline can have causes such as anomalies, incorrect operations, malfunction of pressure control equipment, and other causes such as failures in gaskets, :flanges, fittings, etc. Anomalies that may arise in a pipeline can be mechanical damage (third-party damage). corrosion (leading to metal loss), and cracks in seam welds, gouges, wrinkle bends, and outside forces. The integrity assessment methods are to detect and characterize the presence of anomalies. This study is to review the common techniques used for pipeline integrity assessment and to address some new technologies in. this field.
