A Study on Airbag Sensor Location Due to Frontal Crash Modes in order toAutomotive Safety Enhancement abstract

Installing the crash sensor in different points of the car, consequences different acceleration signals and so different airbag control unit decision. In this paper, finding the proper place to install the crash sensor is studied for improvement the timing of activation of airbag. Accordingly, the airbag will be activated in the desired time resulting the enhancement of passenger safety. Crash sensor location should be consistent with the algorithms used to identify the severity of the crash. Several algorithms have been designed for the airbag system diagnostic process. In this paper, the residual energy density algorithm has been used. To analyze the behavior of the car in accident, some crash tests designed and simulated. Crash tests onducted in eight different states: Frontal full collision to the rigid wall at speeds of 8 and 14 mph, Frontal 40 percent of the car collision to the rigid barrier at speed of 8, 14 mph, Central line of car collision to the rigid pole at speed of 11, 17 mph, 10 percent offset central line of car collision to the rigid pole at speed of 11, 17 mph. Sensors mounted in seven points: on the radiator, on the engine casing, back of the front headlight, on the firewall, in the airbag electronic control unit box, on the gearbox casing and on the B-Pillar
