Abstract:
A polyhedral oligomericsilsesquioxane (POSS) with 8 hydroxyl group was used as a reinforcing nanostructured building block to prepare hybrid polyurethane (PU) clearcoat. The effect of POSS content on optical and mechanical properties of hybrids were studied. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy used to characterizing clearcoats and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) used to investigate of mechanical behavior of these clear coats. Visible spectroscopy confirmed POSS addition into polymeric matrix did not have any negative effect on transparency of clearcoats that revealed good compatibility between two phases in hybrid coating. Covalent bond formation between polymeric matrix and the inorganic phase (POSS) was revealed. Hardness deducted from micro hardness measurements revealed an increase with increasing POSS content in high loadings of POSS exceeding 2wt% due to the hard nature of POSS
