Anatomical Distribution And Demographic Data Of Pancreatic Cancer From 1997-2013 In Mashhad, Iran

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women, beingresponsible for 6% of all cancer-related deaths. Approximately 75% of all pancreatic carcinomasoccur within the head or neck of the pancreas, 15-20% occurs in the body of pancreas, and 5-10%occurs in the tail. It is more common in men than women and is predominantly a disease of elderlypeople. This study was designed to determine a new data of anatomical distribution anddemographic data of pancreatic cancer in North East of Iran. Records of patients diagnosed withpancreatic cancer from March 1997 to February 2013 in mashhad Qaem and Omid hospital werereviewed for demographic data and anatomical location of tumor. Statistical analysis wasperformed using the SPSS software. There was 408 patients with pancreatic cancer (mean age of60.45±0.63). Participants were 262 men (64.2) and 146 women (35.8) with a mean age of 60.55 ± 0.83and 60.27± 1.04 years, respectively. Location of lesion in 131 patients was in head of pancrease, themost prevalent part. 267 Patients were suffered from lesions in unspecified of pancreas. Tail ofpancreas in 4 of cases, Body of pancreas in 6 of cases patient were involved. Pathology shows thatthe most form of pancreatic cancer was adenocarcinoma (64.8%). Our results showed that the mostcommon area of pancrease involved in cancer located in the head, and there is no statisticalsignificant difference between male and female, and the body of pancrease was involved more thanthe tail.
