Facile synthesis of gentamicin loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and study of their drug release abstract

In this study, a facile method for the synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) at room temperature in 30 min, under concentrated aqueous solution. The resulting ZIF-8 crystals possessed large micropore volume, high surface area with an average particle size of 200 nm. This cationic host material exhibits high drug loading capacity of gentamicin anions through ion exchange and salt penetration procedures. Drug release studied at pH 5.0 and pH 7.4 and release in acidic condition was faster than in physiological condition. These demonstrate ZIF-8 to be a valuable candidate for delivery of antibiotic agents and display its potential applications in the treatment of infectious diseases
