Silicon Nanoparticle Fabricated via High Energy Ball Milling as a High Capacity Anode for Lithium-ion Batteries

Silicon nanostructure is potentially studied as a negative electrode in lithium ion batteries. In this study, micro-grain silicon was mechanically activated during 6 hours using the planetary ball mill and was prepared the silicon nanoparticle with the average particle size of 230 nm. Morphological and chemical identification of silicon nanoparticles were confirmed using the FE-SEM and XRD analyses. In order to investigation of the electrochemical performance of the silicon anode, Galvanostatic charge state was applied, achieving the specific charge capacity of 0.4 mAh/cm2 at 0.2 mA/cm2 current density. Moreover, the CV curves showed that the rate of electron transfer is so fast the traced back to the rate of mass transfer.
