Fabrication of nano-crystalline aluminum hydroxide gel from secondary aluminum dross abstract

Secondary aluminum dross as a solid waste possesses serious environmental and health issues due to its bulk volume, toxicity or physical nature. If an appropriate approach could be found to utilize this kind of solid waste, it will provide a three-fold advantage to both environment and industries. At first, the amount of the waste dumped in the vicinity of aluminium factories and consequently respective disposal cost could be partly decreased, secondly the of environmental contamination can be diminished, and thirdly if possible, production of advanced materials from this waste can lead to the preservation of natural resources and gaining economic benefits. This paper is devoted to investigate the synthesis and characterization of nano-crystalline aluminum hydroxide gel (AHG) fabricated from secondary aluminum dross as a hazardous industrial waste generated during aluminum smelting process. Characterization of AHG was done using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).
