Improvement Corrosion Performance of Clear Epoxy Based Coatings via Surface Modified Zirconia Nano-Particles abstract
In this study, surface modification and characterization of Zirconia nano-particles were investigated. In order to achieve proper dispersion of nano-particles in clear epoxy-based coating and increasing possible interactions between nano-particles and epoxy based clear coating, the surface of the nano-particles was treated with 3- trimethoxysilyl-propylamine (APS). APS modified Zirconia nano-particles were then characterized with TGA and FTIR techniques. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) studies have been carried out to evaluate corrosion protection performance of clear epoxy based coatings with different Wt. % of Zirconia nanoparticles. Coating containing 3 wt. % of Zirconia nano-particles revealed the best performance over 8 days of immersion time. The improved performance of nanocomposite epoxy coating is due to the contribution of high ohmic resistance of Zirconia nano-particles within the polymeric matrix
