Delphinium Zalil, a New Source of Natural Dye for Silk Dyeing abstract
Delphinium Zalil from the family Ranunculaceae grows naturally in mountainous area of north-east of Iran. It has beautiful yellow flowers which contain flavonoids. In the present study, the flowers of D. Zalil was collected from the land, dried, powdered and extracted with different solvent systems. The extracts were subjected to HPLC separation and several chemical components were identified. Three main aglicones identified as quercetin, kaemferol, and apigenin. It is believed that quercetin is the main aglicone responsible for the color of the flowers in D. Zalil. It’s flowers were used for dyeing silk yarns and the dyeing process was optimized. The color strength values of yarns dyed with D. Zalil flowers proves that premordanting increase the absorption of dye to some extent. Dyed silk yarns present good light fastness compared to Blue Scale. The results of this research can also lead one to the optimum amount of mordant which is of special interest to environmentalists.
