Preparation of Water-Based Alkyd/Acrylic Hybrid Resins abstract
Alkyd resins are amongst the most important and the most used resins in coating sectors. Some unique properties of these resins are the reasons for the preference for employing this family of resins. In spite of these technically important properties (good film formation ability and high mechanical and chemical properties of the formed film etc) the environmental concerns limits use of these resins. This is mainly due to the use of organic solvents in preparing paint and coatings made from these resins. Consequently, enormous research efforts have been devoted to make these resins water-based or waterborne or water reducible. In parallel with these resins another family of resins was successfully developed for water-based coatings, i.e acrylic resins. Investigations were triggered to combine these two families of the resins. As a result, a new class of resins was emerged known as alkyd/acrylic hybrid resins. In this communication we report on the successful preparation of alkyd resins emulsified by grafted acrylic resins on their fatty acid moieties. The resins are of nanometric particle size dispersed in water without any need to emulsifying agent. Morphology and film formation of the prepared resins were studied. As an advantage of these resins is their ability to be cross-linked using proper dryers
