Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the ability of 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3-GPTMS)functionalized nano-alumina (Al2O3) to enhance the flexural properties of E-glass chopped strand mat/epoxycomposites. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that 3-GPTMS was successfully grafted onto theAl2O3 nanoparticles. Defined weight percentages of the 3-GPTMS functionalized alumina (3-GPTMS/Al2O3)nanoparticles (0.5, 1, 3, and 5 wt.%) were incorporated within the polymer matrix of composites. The resultsdemonstrated that the addition of 1 wt.% 3-GPTMS/Al2O3 gave the highest flexural strength, when compared withpure epoxy specimen, while the 3 wt.% 3-GPTMS/Al2O3 loaded composite showed the highest flexural modulus.Fracture morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed better fiber/matrix interfacial bondingin the multiscale composites.
