Active Tectonics and Climate Change abstract

Active tectonics and climate change are two key elements in development of large slope movements in mountain belts. This paper deals with relationships between active tectonics, seismicity, and climate change. Continuous environment instabilities such as climate can gradually modify ecosystem. Unexpected huge disturbances like seismic events may have direct and considerable impacts over landscape and ecosystem. Different examples throughout the world indicate that seismotectonic dynamic process is affected by several variables. Palaeoseismic investigations are concerned with identifying geologic or geomorphic features associated with sharp effects of previous earthquakes, tsunami and uplift or subsidence, leading to reliable evaluation of earthquakes. Climate change is a global concern affecting various human settlements, while the related impacts are estimated to be more extended in large cities. Climate change vulnerability represents high risk of economic loss and environment degradation.
