Abstract:

In this study, non-thermal atmospheric pressureplasma jet (APPJ) was utilized to improve the adhesion ofRaw and Frit glazes. These glazes are widely used inindustry to make chinaware, decorative dishes and tilesapplied at wall and floor. As they should be painted beforeuse, increasing their adhesive properties leads to a betterpaint durability. Electrical and optical characteristics of theplasma jet are investigated to optimize for efficient treatment.Contact angle measurement and surface energy calculationdemonstrate a drastic increase after the plasmatreatment indicating wettability and paintability enhancement. Moreover, atomic force microscopy and X-rayphotoelectron spectroscopy analyses were performed onthe specimens to explore the influence of helium plasma jeton the physical and chemical properties of the glazes, microscopically. AFM analysis reveals surface etchingresulted from the bombardment of the solid surfaces by theAPPJ using helium fed gas. The process aims to enhanceadhesive properties of glaze surfaces.
