Abstract:
In this study effects of cadmium on three major compartments of the environment, Air, Water and Soil and thereupon effect of each on human health are investigated. Different sources of cadmium emissions are natural and anthropogenic sources. Cadmium emissions to air arise from the combustion of fossil fuels, iron and steel production, non-ferrous metals production and municipal solid waste combustion. Cadmium emissions to water arise from phosphate fertilisers,non-ferrous metals production, and the iron and steel industry. Cadmium emissions to soils arise from atmospheric deposition, sewage sludge application, phosphate fertiliser application, iron and steel industry, non-ferrous metals production, fossil fuel combustion, cement manufacture, disposal of spent cadmium-containing products and naturally-occurring wastes such as grass, food and soil which inherently contain trace levels of cadmium. Effects of cadmium on human health directly depend on air, water and soil which tainted with cadmium. Cadmium exposure produces adverse health effects on human and can produce toxic effects.
