Elderly population: messages for policymakers abstract

Elderly age begins at 60, according to WHO for low- and middle-income countries, though this age is considered 65 for high-income countries.Elderly population is a major but neglected health problem. Over the past 40 years, improvement in hygiene and medical processes have led to higher life expectancy in Iran. This change has occurred at the fastest rate in the Guilan province in northern Iran. In 2018, the mean percentage of the elderly population has been reported 13.2% in Guilan. However, this rate in Amlash city has increased up to 17.6%. Therefore, we should now emphasize on the importance of Geriatrics and the reform of primary care system for medical care services in this area.
